ROBOTS AND PEOPLE CAN BE FRIENDS!
I have a vivid memory dating back a good few years when becoming a HR Manager of a large company: during my first days in the position whilst learning about the people and processes of the organization, I was introduced to a “mammoth” – an annual holiday schedule that consisted of properly taped together Excel tables; some meter by meter in size; and colourful like a rainbow with all its comments-changes-proposals. The lovely person who was responsible for its creation and maintenance glowed with real pride whilst whispering to me: “Cannot trust these robotic, modern IT programmes – it is all devilish stuff!”. Looking at it in utter disbelief (you can only imagine the time and human resources spent on creating it!), I faced a choice: either say “I think this organization is not really for me, hence au revoir” or send the ancient creature back to the Ice Age. I stayed and did the latter!
As a HR Professional, I am very pleased to witness that “the language of efficiency” is no longer the privilege of ops and finance, but is more and more “spoken” also by the HR people. Rightly so since allowing the involvement of “robots” (i.e. IT-systems that allow us to be effective and efficient within our role) means that we can focus on supporting and developing what adds the real value – people!
So happy, pleased, and grateful to have been involved as an Editor and Project Manager in the “birth” of the book “HRM’s IT-Systems: Introduction. Present, Future, Application, and Choice”. An excellent companion for any professional in the field of HR since this book gives a good overview of a variety of IT possibilities, useful hints and tips, offers inspiration, is objective and honest as well as – let the drums play! - besides being for the first time in “human lingo” is now available also in Estonian. History has been made!
Next step is publishing an adapted version for the foreign market (yep, this time in English).
Very thankful to Karl Laas and Vladimir Jelov for this wonderful opportunity in making the world of HR a better place! :)
And yes – this is also how I became a cover girl! :)
